Ringing in the new year: Temperatures bottom out Wednesday morning, warm heading into 2026

/ December 30, 2025 at 6:15 PM

2025 will finish on a chilly note, but temperatures will moderate heading into 2026, with near-normal temperatures expected to start the new year.

Temperatures will bottom out Wednesday morning in the upper 20s, so be sure to make sure pets and people have a warm place to be tonight into the morning hours. It’ll still be a chilly day as temperatures warm to just the mid-50s in the afternoon, but that’ll represent a few degrees of warmth over Tuesday, too.

You’ll want to ensure you’re dressed warmly for any New Year’s festivities: temperatures will be falling into the low 40s around midnight, and westerly winds will remain around 5-10 MPH or so, sending the wind chill into the mid-30s. However, there’s no rain to speak of and it should otherwise be a good evening to be out and about (safely!)

New Year’s Day will start in the mid-30s, warming to around 60° in the afternoon as temperatures continue to moderate. Sunshine abounds, and there are no major concerns otherwise. A front will drop south toward the area on Friday, and that will kick up cloud cover ahead of what should be a rainy Saturday. Temperatures Friday continue to trend warmer despite the cloud cover, with upper 30s to around 40° in the morning warming to the low-to-mid-60s in the afternoon.

Weekend preview: Rain returns Saturday, clearing out Sunday

The first rain chance of 2026 will arrive Saturday as low pressure along the aforementioned front moves across the area. The best rain chances will be found in the afternoon and evening hours. Despite the rain, temperatures remain slightly on the warm side of early January normals, with lows in the upper 40s to around 50° yielding to highs in the low 60s. Low pressure clears out and the front gets south of us on Sunday, but the airmass won’t cool off too sharply. Expect lows in the mid-40s to warm to around 60° on Sunday afternoon as cloud cover disperses in the morning, leaving partly cloudy skies for the balance of the day.
