The week ahead: Much cooler weather on the horizon after a mid-week front

/ December 11, 2022 at 10:12 PM

Aside from a couple days in the middle of the week where we will be a little warmer ahead of a storm system, below-normal temperatures will generally be more the rule than the exception, especially as we head into the weekend in the wake of the aforementioned storm system and its associated cold front.

We start the week with high pressure rebuilding to our north, which will help drive another round of cooler air back into the area. Cloud cover, thankfully, will continue to break, and we should see some decently sunny skies Monday and particularly on Tuesday. Despite the sunshine, temperatures will stay on the cool side, especially on Tuesday when highs look to struggle to top out in the upper 50s after a chilly start in the upper 30s.

We’ll start to see some return flow on Wednesday that will help temperatures rebound into the mid-60s in the afternoon. Moisture will also start heading back our way, with shower chances increasing after sunset.

A warm front will lift north of the area very early Thursday morning, which will give us a mild start in the mid-50s ahead of highs in the low 70s as showers and maybe even a thunderstorm roll through the area ahead of the front. Once the front gets by, cloud cover clears and temperatures head down below normal for Friday and Saturday. A reinforcing cold front comes through late Saturday, sending temperatures down even further — despite plenty of sunshine, highs will struggle into the low 50s on Sunday. Hope you didn’t pack the sweaters, because you’ll need ’em!

The longer-term outlook will continue to favor cooler-than-normal temperatures across much of the country as Arctic air makes a decent incursion into the lower 48 — just in time for the last shopping week before Christmas.
