The week ahead: Warming trend as astronomical spring begins

/ March 19, 2023 at 6:30 PM

Our bout of chilly weather will be giving way to a warming trend as the week goes on with little in the way of precipitation to speak of.

Monday marks the first day of astronomical spring as we reach the vernal equinox at 5:24 PM. Temperatures certainly won’t feel like it: After starting the day in the upper 30s (with wind chills about 5° lower), we’ll warm to just about 60° under a mix of sun and clouds. Diminishing cloud cover and slackening winds may allow for some freezing temperatures well inland Monday night into Tuesday morning, so a Freeze Watch is in effect for inland Berkeley and Dorchester. The potential for frost formation will need to be monitored as well.

From there, a warming trend commences. Tuesday will peak in the mid-60s under partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies, while Wednesday could run even warmer with highs possibly peaking in the mid-70s with skies becoming mostly cloudy for a bit. Northeasterly winds to start will go a little more southeasterly as a coastal trough moves ashore; it’s unclear if said trough might generate a shower or two across the area, but right now the risk for rain in any one location looks quite low.

Thursday marks a return to the 80s that lasts into the weekend. We’ll start the day in the upper 50s and peak around 82° or so in the metro area (cooler at the coast) under mostly sunny skies. Friday will take the baton from Thursday and keep similar, if not even slightly warmer, conditions in place.

As we head into the weekend, a cold front will approach the area and could bring some showers to the area, but precipitation looks to be far from a sure thing right now. Temperatures will continue to run in the low 80s each afternoon after starting in the upper 50s/low 60s.
