The week ahead: Unsettled start followed by a brief “cooldown”

/ July 30, 2023 at 11:15 PM

The week ahead starts out unsettled as a front meanders in the area before we “cool off” a bit heading into mid-week as the aforementioned front pushes south, ushering in a slightly cooler and drier airmass. Ridging then builds back in to warm us up later in the week.

Monday will be another warm day across the area; we’ll start the day in the low 70s and head to the low 90s in the afternoon, with heat indices pushing 100° at peak heating. Later in the afternoon and into the evening, we should start to see another round of showers and thunderstorms develop and move southeastward toward the coast. A couple of these storms could be on the strong side with gusty winds the main threat; heavy rain and frequent lightning will once again be possible as well. Not everyone will see storms, though.

Rain chances remain elevated on Tuesday afternoon as the front slowly moves south of the area. We should see some seabreeze storms fire and move through the area during the afternoon, though it appears the severe threat is a little lower. Dewpoints won’t be quite so high on Tuesday, and highs in the low 90s will combine with the aforementioned dewpoints topping out around 70-71° to yield heat indices around 98°.

Wednesday looks like it is actually going to feel pretty good, at least comparatively: Highs around 90° with dewpoints in the mid-60s will almost feel pleasant. A seabreeze storm or two is possible as well, but overall much of us get the day in rain-free. We keep those vibes going into Thursday, though dewpoints will be starting to creep back up as the airmass modifies. By the weekend, we’re back into a warming and humidifying trend, with heat indices over 105° possible Saturday and again on Sunday with a bit more in the way of afternoon showers and thunderstorms as well.
