Rest of the work week: Chilly start to Wednesday, followed by showers, then quieter Thursday and Friday

/ January 2, 2024 at 8:55 PM

Wednesday gets off to a freezing start across the metro area as lows dip into the low 30s away from the warmer coastline thanks to calm winds and mostly clear skies setting up for a good night of radiational cooling. The sub-freezing air doesn’t last long, though, as moisture increases ahead of a storm system that will be traversing the Gulf of Mexico during the day Wednesday. It’ll fling some showers our direction, primarily from late afternoon Wednesday into the overnight and very early Thursday morning.

The storm system clears the area by daybreak Thursday, setting up a couple quiet days of weather. Expect highs in the mid-50s on Thursday and Friday, with an upper 30s start on Thursday before heading back to near the freezing mark on Friday morning.

Weekend outlook: Storm system brings wind, heavy rain on Saturday

A storm system taking shape in the Gulf on Friday will affect the area Saturday. Expect windy conditions at times as we sit between low pressure to the southwest and high pressure to the northeast. Meanwhile, showers will be increasing from west to east as well, with some periods of heavy rain possible along with a few thunderstorms as the warm sector of the storm pushes across the area. Temperatures Saturday morning start in the mid-40s, while we warm to nearly 70° in the afternoon despite the rain. Rain rates will be monitored for a freshwater flooding threat, though it doesn’t look like wind trajectories will be conducive to coastal flooding (thankfully!). Regardless, Saturday just doesn’t look like it’ll be a particularly great day weather-wise.

Improving conditions arrive Sunday in the wake of Saturday’s storm system. We start in the low-to-mid-40s once again and warm to near 60° as winds slacken and cloud cover decreases. Overall, the pattern will remain active across the eastern US, with another storm system poised to affect the area on Tuesday after a quiet Monday.
