Thanksgiving forecast: Quiet Wednesday, stormy Thursday, chilly Friday
We have quite the weather rollercoaster in store for the Thanksgiving 2024 holiday period. First, Wednesday will run much warmer than normal despite a frontal passage Tuesday night; expect lows in the mid-50s to yield to highs in the low 70s under partly cloudy skies as the front lingers just to the south. We’ll stay rain-free on Wednesday, though showers will be approaching from the west with another, stronger frontal system.
The aforementioned front from Tuesday lifts back northward as a warm front later Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, ushering in a warmer and more unstable airmass. Temperatures start near 60° on Thanksgiving morning, warming to the mid-70s in the afternoon. Showers look to be a good bet, and you can’t rule out a few embedded thunderstorms either. Ample shear could allow a couple of those storms to become strong to even severe, with damaging wind gusts a possibility, though the risk is very low at this point. Will be something to keep an eye on, though, especially if storms can stay organized as they approach.
The front gets through late Thursday into early Friday, shutting off rain chances and ushering in a much cooler and drier airmass. Friday starts around 50°, warming to just the low 60s in the afternoon despite cloud cover decreasing throughout the day. It could be a breezy day as well, with gusts to 25 MPH possible, as the cooler air rushes in. This first shot of cold will be reinforced again over the weekend, with frost and freeze concerns beginning Friday night. Fine-tuned details will need to be worked out, but I would consider bringing in those sensitive plants beginning Friday night and especially by Sunday night.
