Friday & the weekend: A few more chilly days

/ December 5, 2024 at 6:04 PM

We have a few more chilly days in store this week, especially on Friday, as another shot of cool air works its way through the area. (At least it won’t rain!)

First off, Friday morning will feature a Cold Weather Advisory from 3-9am for wind chills between 18-20° as a brisk northerly wind continues to advect cold air into the area overnight. Air temperatures will start in the upper 20s and will only warm to about the mid-40s during the day despite brilliant, unfettered sunshine. Winds will steadily decrease especially as we get into the evening.

The coldest air of the period will be felt Saturday morning. Winds out of the north will be lighter, and with clear skies, we should have a decent round of radiational cooling. This sends air temperatures down generally into the mid-20s away from the coast. The wind chill will be negligible, with feels-like temperatures generally about 1-2° cooler. Still, I wouldn’t be shocked to see another Cold Weather Advisory for inland locations Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon will still be chilly, but we will at least get back into the 50s in the afternoon with mostly sunny skies expected.

Sunday starts back below freezing, but not nearly to the degree as the past couple days. Expect lows generally around freezing away from the coast; we’ll run in the mid-to-upper 30s in places like downtown Charleston and at the beaches. Temperatures Sunday afternoon head to the mid-60s, with mostly sunny skies once again in place.

From there, we turn warmer for the first part of the new work week as the next storm system approaches. We’ll pop back into the 70s for a spell (specifically Monday and Tuesday) before we turn cooler for the second half of the week. Rain chances will come along with this system as well, and we’ll see those peak generally Tuesday into Wednesday.
