Weekend forecast: Unseasonably warm; strong storms possible Sunday
The final weekend of 2024 will be unseasonably warm as we get into the warm sector of an approaching storm system that could bring some rough conditions on Sunday.
First, though, we’ll start Saturday in foggy fashion. A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect through 7am; use low beams, extra following distance, and extra patience if you’ve got somewhere to be Saturday morning. The fog scours out by mid-morning, and with the wedge of high pressure finally weakening, temperatures will head to the mid-70s by afternoon. We could see a few showers at times, but they should be generally scattered in nature, and it won’t rain all day at any one location.
Sunday is trickier, and if the ingredients line up, could involve some strong to severe thunderstorms ahead of a cold front. We start the day very mild — the forecast low of 61° is the normal high for December 29 — and warm to the low 70s in the afternoon. All the while, we’ll be watching a band of showers and thunderstorms approach from the west. Wind shear looks pretty good, and if the atmosphere can get unstable enough, some damaging wind gusts will be possible from the stronger storms. As is typical this time of year, the best severe weather risk likely resides inland from the coast (roughly 17-A corridor and points west), where the cooling influence of the nearby shelf waters likely will disrupt any surface-based instability. Regardless of any severe weather, Sunday looks like it could be a fairly wet day, so plan for being indoors a good bit of the day.
The front will clear overnight, sending dewpoints back to the 50s, but Monday and Tuesday still look warm with highs in the 70s both days. Another front comes through overnight Tuesday, ushering in a cooler and quieter start to 2025.
