The week ahead: A benign, seasonably cool start to 2025

/ December 29, 2024 at 11:08 PM

After a windy and wet cold front on Sunday that, thankfully, was devoid of any severe weather in the Lowcountry, we’ll finish 2024 on a warm but quiet note and ring in 2025 with more seasonable temperatures.

The front will be well offshore by daybreak Monday, and while the low of 50° is still well above normal for December 30, it’ll be much cooler the mid-60s we started Sunday off with. We’ll warm to the upper 60s under partly cloudy skies on Monday, making for a rather nice afternoon across the Lowcountry. Expect a similar performance on New Year’s Eve, with lows in the upper 40s warming again to the upper 60s to around 70° in the afternoon before a cold front moves through later in the day. It’ll be a dry frontal passage, so no concerns for New Year’s Eve festivities this go-around.

2025 will start with a Canadian airmass settling in over the region on Wednesday. Lows in the mid-40s will only warm to the low 60s in the afternoon despite full sunshine, making for a climatologically appropriate start to the year. We’ll turn even cooler on January 2, with a stretch of temperatures running slightly below normal starting Thursday and lasting at least into the weekend. Temperatures will generally run in the mid-30s each morning, with highs peaking in the mid-to-upper 50s each afternoon. Mostly sunny skies are expected with high pressure the main weather feature through Sunday.

Below-normal temperatures are generally favored as we get into the first full week of January 2025 as the pattern looks quite chilly for the eastern half of the country, but it remains to be seen how cold it will get, apocalyptic weather model images be damned. As always, stay tuned!
