Rest of the work week: A frigid few mornings ahead

/ January 7, 2025 at 8:23 PM

The chilly week continues as we get over the hump and down the stretch with high pressure in place for a couple more days ahead of a storm system that will affect the area Friday night into Saturday. You’ll want to make sure you have sensitive plants covered and your pets indoors the next few nights for sure with such cold temperatures expected!

We have more sunshine on tap for Wednesday, but we get started in the mid-20s. Light to calm winds, thankfully, will mean no wind chill issues. However, it’ll still be plenty chilly enough to where you might even consider dripping a faucet overnight. We’ll rebound to the low 50s on Wednesday afternoon after not cracking 50° on Tuesday. A reinforcing shot of cold air, though, will drive Thursday even colder. Lows once again start in the mid-20s, and highs will struggle to the mid-40s at best with the reinforced Arctic air in place.

A storm system will begin to affect the area Friday night, but despite the chilly air in place, it won’t be cold enough near the ground for any wintry precipitation aside from perhaps a few conversational snowflakes mixing in along and west of I-95 Friday afternoon/early evening before changing over to all rain as warmer air aloft pushes into the area. Showers tick up later Friday into overnight Saturday, with some gradual tapering expected during the day Saturday before clearing the area by Saturday evening. Lows on Saturday get to the mid-30s, but warmer air aloft will melt snowflakes well before they can make it to the surface, so wintry mix is not expected — just a chilly rain. Thus, unless there are major changes in the guidance between now and Friday, this generally looks like a fairly low-impact event for the Charleston metro area. Fingers crossed it stays that way!
