The week ahead: After a taste of winter weather, spring-like conditions close January

/ January 26, 2025 at 10:48 PM

January will end much differently than how it has gone thus far as temperatures head around and even above normal to close out the month and bring in February with just a few rain chances mixed in to start and end the week.

Monday will start out in the mid-to-upper 30s, which could still be tenable for a few remaining icy spots to hang on just a little longer in the morning. However, showers moving into the area will spell the end of the snowpack for most of us. Highs top out in the low 50s, but this is cool as we get this week.

Quiet weather generally is expected Tuesday-Friday as temperatures head to normal or even above-normal levels. Temperatures warm from the low 60s on Tuesday to the upper 60s on Wednesday before a dry front moves by, knocking temps down a touch for Thursday. They’ll rebound again Friday heading into the weekend as another front moves by, with highs in the 70s possible to start February. We could also contend with some showers as the front moves by, generally Saturday afternoon through midday Sunday. Keep an eye on forecast updates throughout the week as timings are refined for weekend rain.

Rumors of more winter weather?

Some long-range model watchers have noticed a couple scenarios in operational guidance over the past few days suggesting that another round of winter weather is possible here in the next couple weeks, and word is spreading as it often does. As always, I urge caution — long-range models can be helpful in sniffing out a possible pattern, but are not skillful at forecast specifics. I took a peek at ensemble guidance this evening, and the pattern looks much warmer for our neck of the woods (as this week’s forecast illustrates). The Climate Prediction Center agrees as it strongly favors above-normal temperatures through the next couple weeks.

This certainly isn’t an outlook I’d expect from CPC for winter weather here in the Lowcountry. A look at the global model super ensemble shows nothing to speak of snow-wise in the Lowcountry through at least the second week of February, too:

As always, we in the weather enterprise will keep you posted on anything actionable you need to know about any winter weather. For now, though, the pattern looks highly unsupportive of another round of snow and ice. If that changes, we’ll keep you posted.
