The week ahead: More unsettled as we get back aboard the temperature rollercoaster

/ February 9, 2025 at 11:40 PM

After a record-breaking stretch of warmth over the past few days, we turn much cooler and cloudier for Monday as a backdoor front slides south and cooler high pressure wedges into the area in its wake. We could see some showers in the morning, but otherwise expect a mostly overcast day as lows in the mid-50s only warm a few degrees, perhaps not even cracking 60° in the afternoon. This stands in stark contrast to the record high of 84° set on Sunday, smashing the previous record for the date of 80° set in 1949. And while it’s been easy to forget with such warm weather, it is still February, and these things happen.

The wedge continues to hang around the area on Tuesday, and a few showers will be possible underneath it. Lows in the mid-40s start the day, with temperatures optimistically reaching the mid-60s in the afternoon, though these kinds of things can often break much cooler with this sort of surface pressure pattern. The chill comes to an end on Wednesday, though, as a warm front lifts north of the area, sending highs to the mid-70s in the afternoon. A few showers will be possible on Wednesday, but many of us may stay rain-free, too. Better rain chances arrive with another front on Thursday, with showers and maybe even a few rumbles of thunder possible Thursday afternoon. Highs on Thursday top back out in the mid-70s after a start around 60°, but temperatures take a tumble for Friday in the wake of the front as highs peak only around 60°. A few showers will be possible early in the day, but much of us should stay rain-free.

Another warmup takes place over the weekend in advance of another front, which could again bring showers and maybe a few thunderstorms particularly on Sunday. Temperatures Saturday peak in the upper 60s, while we’re looking at low 70s for Sunday.
