The week ahead: Cooler-than-normal temperatures return

The week ahead will be notable for the return of cooler-than-normal temperatures to the forecast, especially after a mid-week storm system moves by which will send morning lows below freezing for the first time since the mid-January snowstorm.
The front that came through on Sunday with winds gusting 40-50 MPH will help send temperatures down to the mid-to-upper 30s on Monday morning, warming to just the mid-50s under mostly sunny skies. The airmass warms a little on Tuesday ahead of the next storm system, with lows in the mid-30s heading to the low 60s in the afternoon under partly cloudy skies. This will be where temperatures peak this week as the next front will chill us out even further.
Wednesday will likely be a wash with widespread showers expected. (It’s not yet known if thunder will get involved.) Lows in the mid-to-upper 40s warm to just the mid-50s in a chilly rain setup that should bring over an inch of much-needed rain to many of us in the Lowcountry. Winter weather will not be an issue here, but a wintry mix may be found from the NC/SC border and points north.
Temperatures start much cooler Thursday in the wake of this storm system. Lows bottom out in the mid-30s, but temperatures only head to the upper 40s in the afternoon despite increasing sunshine. Friday is the coldest of the set, with lows in the mid-20s to start the day warming to just the upper 40s once again in the afternoon with nearly full sunshine expected.
Shower chances tick up again each afternoon this weekend as a trough of low pressure sharpens near the coast. Temperatures will turn a little warmer, but will remain below normal with another freezing start Saturday morning before an afternoon in the low 50s. Sunday starts above freezing, with highs in the mid-to-upper 50s in the afternoon. Wait and see on those shower chances, but for now, don’t expect a rainout — certainly nothing like what’s expected Wednesday.
