The week ahead: A reprieve from the heat is coming

The week ahead starts with a continuation of the abnormally warm temperatures we’ve been feeling for the better part of the past week, though some relief is in sight as a cold front brings cooler and drier air to close out the week and head into Memorial Day Weekend.
First, though, the summer preview continues. We’ll start Monday around 70°, warming to the low 90s in the afternoon with a bit less in the way of cloud cover expected. We could see a storm or two later in the afternoon into the evening as the seabreeze moves inland; there’s also some indication that a thunderstorm complex could move by to our north as it dissipates, which could scrape parts of the area north of 26, but we’ll see how that materializes. With all that in mind, it sure seems the vast majority of us get the day in rain-free — just be ready for that stray storm at times.
The heat peaks on Tuesday as highs soar into the mid-90s under generally partly cloudy skies. The risk for a thunderstorm is low enough as to be generally unmentionable, though you can never totally rule it out. A trough aloft and the surface front approach the area on Wednesday, bringing with them another chance for some showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. However, today’s models are pretty dry with the frontal passage, all things considered, so we’ll see how this evolves over the next couple days.
The front crosses through Wednesday night and is offshore by Thursday. Westerly winds in the wake of the front will allow highs to reach the upper 80s on Thursday, but a bit more of a northerly direction takes hold starting Friday as high pressure continues to build in, and this sends us back to a much more springlike feel with lows falling to the upper 50s to low 60s by Memorial Day Weekend with highs in the low 80s — all with plenty of sunshine throughout.
