Rest of the work week: Staying stormy

/ May 26, 2025 at 9:46 PM

The weather will remain unsettled for the rest of this last work week of May with plenty of warm and humid air for various surface boundaries and mid-level impulses to stir things up, especially in the afternoons and evenings.

On Tuesday, we start the day with the stalled warm front to our south and high pressure to our north. A few storms may graze the coast in the morning, but a good bit of us will probably get the morning in rain-free. As the seabreeze gets going, though, we should see additional showers and thunderstorms fire up. Temperatures start in the upper 60s in the morning. Between the onshore flow around the high to our north and the expected start of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, highs will be capped out in the mid-80s.

The front lifts north of the area later Tuesday and is well north of the area on Wednesday, placing us firmly in the warm sector. The upper-air configuration continues to drive some impulses across the area, and the continued warm and humid airmass will provide plenty of juice for more showers and thunderstorms to develop and move across the area during the afternoon and evening. We’ll run warmer with the more southerly flow in place; expect highs to top out in the upper 80s after we start the day in the upper 60s to around 70°. We’ll do this again on Thursday as a little more mid-level energy works through.

On Friday, a cold front will approach the area, and this will be the main trigger for showers and thunderstorms, once again generally in the afternoon and early evening hours, though at this range timing can vary. Depending on when the front comes through, a few stronger storms can’t be totally ruled out, so we’ll keep an eye on that. Behind the front, we’ll get a bit of a respite from the storms with a little bit of drier air working in for the weekend.
