The week ahead: A chilly few days before temperatures get back to normal

/ January 18, 2026 at 8:38 PM

After some much-needed rain on Sunday, we get into a stretch of a few quiet but chilly days beginning on Monday. We’ll start Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the mid-to-upper 20s across much of the metro away from the immediate coastline. There’s a slight chance for a little black ice in more sheltered and rural areas in the morning, but the vast majority of us will be okay as drier air with elevated winds should evaporate much, if not all, of today’s rain before things freeze. Temperatures will head into the low 50s with plenty of sunshine.

A reinforcing cold front will make for another chilly day on Tuesday with lows once again in the upper 20s away from the coast. Highs will struggle to about 50° despite mostly sunny skies thanks to the renewed influx of cold air. Wednesday again starts in the 20s, but that’ll be it for the subfreezing starts for a few days as high pressure moves across the area and offshore, allowing Wednesday’s high to peak in the upper 50s with partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies expected.

Another cold front approaches Thursday with more cloud cover and a slight shower chance courtesy of a coastal trough. Temperatures will peak in the low 60s after a much warmer start in the low 40s. The front cools Friday morning back down to the mid-30s, but highs will peak right around normal.

Things turn unsettled for the weekend as another storm system affects the area. Right now, shower chances look to tick up for Saturday with cooler air filtering in for Sunday. There is some buzz in the models about some colder air making a trek south, potentially adding some wintry intrigue for Sunday, but we’ve got a long time to watch and a lot of room for things to change. Stay tuned!
