Weekend forecast: Heat continues with afternoon thunderstorms

Heat, humidity, and chances for afternoon thunderstorms continue into the weekend, with the potential for not only record high temperatures but also record warm low temperatures each day.

After setting a new daily record high of 98° on Friday, Saturday starts in the upper 70s to near 80°, which is within a couple degrees of the record warm low at both the airport and downtown Charleston. From there, temperatures will soar into the mid-to-upper 90s in the afternoon. We should see thunderstorms initiate along and ahead of the seabreeze by the early afternoon. Storm motions will be coastward, so stay alert for the potential for thunderstorms approaching the beaches. Some spots may see very heavy rain, with gusty winds possible as storms intersect the seabreeze and other outflow boundaries. There will also be a risk for minor coastal flooding an hour or two around the 7:16 PM high tide as we head to the new moon on Sunday.
Expect Sunday to be a decent repeat of Saturday, with a similar start challenging record warm low temperatures. Highs will again head into the upper 90s in the afternoon. We’ll see if things can heat up enough to mount a credible challenge to the record high of 99° set in 2010, but thunderstorms will have the final say as they should initiate once again in the early-to-mid afternoon hours, disrupting the temperature curve and cooling a few of us off. Once again, the risk for gusty winds and heavy downpours along with cloud-to-ground lightning will be in play with any thunderstorms that develop. Storm motions will continue to be coastward as well, so be aware on the beaches. Finally, there will once again be a risk for coastal flooding between 7-10 PM as water levels peak into minor flood stage due to the new moon and onshore flow at the surface.
