Tuesday’s forecast: Scattered afternoon storms, a couple of which could be on the strong side

/ June 12, 2023 at 9:52 PM

More showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast for Tuesday afternoon and evening as a stalled front hangs around the area. First, though, we’ll start the day in fine June fashion with lows around 70° in the morning. Temperatures should head to about 90° in the afternoon before thunderstorms fire. Dewpoints in the mid-60s should yield heat indices around 92° — nothing totally out of hand for this point in the year, but certainly steamy.

Tuesday’s severe weather outlook

A few thunderstorms could be on the strong to severe side in the afternoon with damaging wind gusts and hail the main concerns. The best risk of severe storms will be found the further southwest you go; higher probabilities sneak into the southwestern parts of Charleston County on Tuesday’s severe weather outlook.

The positioning of the aforementioned frontal zone will play a role in thunderstorm coverage as well as intensity. If the front sets up a little further south, the risk for severe storms (and perhaps the risk for storms overall) diminishes, and vice versa. Ultimately, it’ll be a little wait-and-see here for the mesoscale details to suss out overnight into tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Rest of the work week: Staying unsettled, particularly Wednesday

We stay unsettled for the rest of the work week as a series of fronts arrive, stall out, and die across the area (as they often do at this point in the year). Wednesday in particular looks quite unsettled as the front might wobble a little more to the north as another round of upper-level energy swings through, while Thursday and Friday will continue to feature a scattering of showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures will generally run in the upper 80s; low 90s look to arrive for Friday and beyond as we look toward Father’s Day.
