Thursday’s forecast: One more (mostly) quiet day

/ July 12, 2023 at 6:48 PM

Expect one more generally quiet weather day on Thursday (though a shower or storm can’t be ruled out in the afternoon, especially further inland) before things turn more unsettled as a trough digs in for Friday and the weekend.

Generally speaking, expect highs in the low-to-mid-90s on Thursday after a start in the mid-70s. Dewpoints look to run a little warmer than they have previous days, which should send the afternoon heat index to around 101-103° or so. We’ll see a bit more in the way of cloud cover as well, but a lot of us in the metro should get the day in without any rain. The best chance of an isolated afternoon shower or storm will be closer to I-95 once again.

Friday & the weekend: More heat, more humidity, more storms

Heat and humidity will continue to creep back into the area for Friday and the weekend along with better thunderstorm chances in the afternoons. Scattered storms will be possible on Friday as a trough begins to dig in once more across the area, while more numerous afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected Saturday and Sunday. Highs are expected to climb solidly into the mid-90s while dewpoints juice into the mid-70s, and heat indices will respond appropriately by heading over 105° (before storms, anyway). The main concerns with these thunderstorms will be very heavy rain and lightning, and a wet microburst or two producing damaging wind gusts can’t be totally discounted either. So, don’t cancel outdoor plans, but don’t make them without having an indoor plan as well.
