Sunday’s forecast: Warm and muggy with a few storms

/ August 19, 2023 at 9:57 PM

Sunday’s forecast looks fairly similar to Saturday’s: We’ll start the day in the mid-70s and head toward around 90° in the afternoon under partly cloudy skies. Heat indices will top out around 100-101°, with perhaps locally higher values closer to the coast. A scattering of showers and thunderstorms will once again be possible as the seabreeze presses inland, with heavy rain a continued concern with decent low-level moisture still in place. Ridging developing aloft will keep a lid on widespread coverage of showers and storms.

The tropics are heating up

Climatologically speaking, we are heading toward the busy part of the tropical season, and the outlook map certainly reflects that. There are four areas of interest in the Atlantic as well as Tropical Depression Six, which was classified earlier Saturday but is not expected to be around very long. There are no immediate concerns for the Lowcountry; the area in the Gulf will stay south and west, the two areas near Africa will stay out there, and the area in the Caribbean is likely to recurve well before it gets to the US. All that said, this serves as a great reminder that things can turn on a dime very quickly this time of year. It’s a great time to check up on your hurricane kit and make sure everything is up to date and ready to go as we move through the busy part of the season.
