Weekend forecast: Big chill incoming

/ January 19, 2024 at 6:29 PM

A rather cold weekend lies ahead as Arctic high pressure visits the Lowcountry, especially Saturday night into Sunday, which will require cold weather precautions for the next few nights.

Air temperatures will fall into the mid-20s in much of the metro area by Saturday morning, while it’ll feel closer to 20° and maybe even colder thanks to northwest winds running around 5-10 MPH. Sunshine will be in abundance, but temperatures will struggle to the mid-40s in the afternoon despite all the insolation. Consider dripping a faucet on Friday night, and make sure pets and plants are protected as well.

Temperatures will be at their coldest Saturday night into Sunday. Expect air temperatures to fall to the low 20s in the metro area, with some upper teens possible in more rural locations away from water. Winds will remain somewhat elevated, and this will make this already bitterly cold airmass feel like temperatures in the single-digits. A rare Wind Chill Advisory is in effect from 1am-10am Sunday as a result. The freeze will reach the coast, so all of us will need to take cold weather precautions Saturday night into Sunday: insulating pipes, leaving a faucet on a drip, covering outdoor spigots, bringing in or covering sensitive plants, ensuring pets are inside and warm, and vulnerable people are taken care of and in a safe, warm place.

High temperatures on Sunday will once again struggle to the low-to-mid-40s at best, once again with nearly unfettered sunshine. So, while it will go above freezing at least, it’s still going to feel quite, quite chilly.

The good news is that this Arctic blast will abate starting Monday after one more subfreezing start. Warmer-than-normal temperatures will dominate much of next week, including a return to the 70s — with showers — starting Wednesday.
