Thursday’s forecast: Another unseasonably warm day with showers

/ January 24, 2024 at 8:06 PM

We hit 77° at the airport on Wednesday, narrowly missing a record high by two degrees (79°, set in 1950 and tied in 1974) and making this the warmest day so far in this young year. We have a chance to top that on Thursday despite showers working their way into the area as we stay within the broad warm sector of a storm system in the mid-South. We should start the day with some patchy fog as lows fall to the low 60s, right around the normal high for this point in the year. Temperatures will then warm to the upper 70s, and there’s a more-than-decent shot that some spots reach 80°. (The record high for January 25 is 82°, set in 1949.) A few showers will be possible across the area during the day, but coverage should be relatively sparse.

Friday & the weekend: Spring-like warmth for a few more days

We stay rather warm for a few more days before a front comes through Sunday to restore order. Friday could be a little stormy as a weaker front stalls nearby, instigating showers and maybe a few thunderstorms. The best risk for rain will be found further inland near the front itself. Temperatures will again head into the mid-70s after a low to mid-60s start, some 15° above normal for this point in the year.

Saturday looks like a Friday redux as the order-restoring front organizes and moves in from the west. Another round of scattered showers and maybe a few thunderstorms will be possible ahead of the front. Highs will top out in the mid-70s one more time before the front crosses the area overnight Saturday into Sunday. Showers will scour out Sunday morning as cooler and drier air moves in, though the colder temperatures will lag a little bit, so we should warm to the low 70s Sunday afternoon as clouds break up, making for what should be a fairly nice afternoon before we head back to work — and more standard late January temperatures — on Monday.
