Memorial Day weekend: Occasionally unsettled

/ May 22, 2026 at 10:12 PM

Shower and thunderstorm chances will accompany a warm and muggy Memorial Day weekend, but don’t expect a rainout, either. Temperatures will generally run in the upper 80s each day, but dewpoints around 70° will make it feel closer to 90-91° pretty much every afternoon.

Storm chances on Saturday will be driven primarily by the seabreeze in the afternoon and early evening. These will propagate inland from the coast; however, be alert on the beaches if storms develop nearby as lightning can strike an area well away from precipitation.

Sunday will feature probably the best chance for rain as a disturbance moves through during the morning. Guidance suggests the chance for a few heavy downpours as well. We should see storms diminish a bit in the afternoon with activity shifting further inland, provided things play out as modeled. We’ll return to seabreeze-driven thunderstorms for Memorial Day with activity once again propagating inland during the afternoon hours.

Have fun outside, but remember that if you begin to hear thunder, it’s time to head inside because you’re in range of getting struck by lightning. Severe or not, every thunderstorm is dangerous because of lightning. When thunder roars, go indoors!
