Friday & the weekend: Dangerous heat continues

Dangerous heat will continue to be the main weather story as we head into Friday and the weekend, with an isolated to scattered afternoon thunderstorm the only real shot at bringing about any reprieve.
An Extreme Heat Warning continues overnight into Friday for Berkeley and Charleston counties, while a Heat Advisory continues for Dorchester County. This will continue until at least 8pm Friday, though it wouldn’t shock me to see these types of headlines continue into the weekend as the NWS heat index forecast continues to show heat indices reaching well into the 110s each afternoon as the seabreeze develops and makes its trek inland, surging dewpoints in its wake. There’s a chance that we may hit the 120° mark in a couple spots in Berkeley and Charleston counties, much as we did on Thursday around Huger and west of Awendaw.
Air temperatures over the next few days will continue to run in the upper 90s, with a run at the century mark possible each day. The only potential for relief comes in the form of afternoon and evening thunderstorms triggered not only by the seabreeze but also by disturbances moving southeastward toward the area. Like Thursday, these thunderstorms may be capable of producing strong winds and very heavy rain given the juicy atmosphere. Where southeasterly-moving thunderstorms push up against the inland-moving seabreeze, there will be the risk for training rainfall and even some flooding. Thunderstorm development is not a guarantee, though, and not everyone will see rain.
This pattern holds tough into the weekend into early next week. The NWS forecast currently shows highs in the 100s both Monday and Tuesday before a slight moderation to the upper 90s by midweek, but we’ll see how this ultimately plays out. Stay cool!
