Thursday: Dry start, stormy finish heads into an unsettled weekend

/ April 26, 2023 at 10:34 PM

We should get a fair bit of Thursday in rain-free, but changes will be coming later in the day as low pressure to the west approaches the area. We start one more morning in the upper 50s before a warm front gradually lifts through the area throughout the day, which will bring dewpoints up in the afternoon and put a little mugginess in the air. A shower or storm along the seabreeze in the afternoon and early evening can’t be totally discounted, but the bulk of the rain arrives after dark with the aforementioned low pressure and will be around for much of the overnight.

Friday and the weekend: Periods of unsettled weather

We’ll have periods of unsettled weather this weekend as troughing persists across the eastern US. We start Friday likely with showers and thunderstorms in the area as the primary batch of rain moves out of the area. Some additional showers and thunderstorms will be possible in the afternoon and evening hours before rain chances taper late. Highs top out in the low 80s.

We should see a lull in the rain on Saturday. It’ll be a warm one as we get some sunshine on top of a fairly humid airmass; we start the day in the mid-60s and top out in the mid-80s in the afternoon. A stray shower or two will be possible, but a bit of ridging in between storm systems will keep things generally rain-free.

This changes again Sunday as a cold front, driven by a vigorous shortwave trough embedded within a broader long wave trough across the eastern US, approaches the area. We should see another round of showers and thunderstorms, perhaps with some heavy rain and gusty winds. Highs top out in the upper 70s after another mid-60s start. The front gets through overnight Sunday, naturally clearing things out just in time for Monday, as is standard in 2023. (Sigh.)
