Rest of the work week: Unsettled weather continues

/ June 20, 2023 at 7:03 PM

The forecast for the rest of the work week will remain on the wet side especially Wednesday and Thursday before the upper low finally starts to dislodge from the blocking pattern on Friday. Until that happens, though, showers and thunderstorms will be possible at pretty much any point in the day, though the afternoons and evenings will be the favored time for storms given daytime heating. We’ll start each day in the low 70s before warming into the mid-80s before thunderstorms put a damper on temperatures. Friday does look a little less soggy with a little more in the way of scattered vs. numerous storms, and that pattern should continue to improve heading into the weekend. Stay tuned for updates as things continue to evolve.

Tropics: Bret’s forecast is weaker, while its followup looks likely soon

Tropical Storm Bret continues to fight wind shear as it moves toward the Lesser Antilles, while Invest 93L behind it looks likely to develop into a tropical cyclone over the next couple days. The National Hurricane Center is giving 93L a 70% probability to develop in the next two days, and an 80% chance to develop within the next week. The next name on the list, should the storm attain tropical storm strength, is Cindy.

Bret, meanwhile, continues to fight wind shear in the Atlantic, though it is strengthening a little bit. Winds are up to 45 MPH as of the 5PM advisory as it heads west at 18 MPH. Bret is no longer expected to become a hurricane, and should peak around 65 MPH as it moves across the Lesser Antilles late Thursday/early Friday. Shear will begin to really have its way with Bret by the weekend, and it is expected to be completely sheared apart by the end of Saturday. Suffice to say, we can confidently say that Bret poses no concerns for the Lowcountry.
