Tuesday: Drier air moves in, turning warmer

/ June 26, 2023 at 9:37 PM

A cold front will move through and stall out nearby on Tuesday, allowing drier air to mix into the area. This will largely suppress cloud cover and will help drive temperatures to the mid-90s in the afternoon; fortunately, the drier air mixing in will also keep dewpoints reasonably in check, so heat indices will only top out around 96°-98° or so.

A few thunderstorms will still be possible very early Tuesday morning, but widespread severe weather does not look to be an issue. Still, there’s a small chance you could be woken up overnight, especially the further north you go.

Rest of the work week: Summer is here

The final work week of June will remain on the warm side, with generally quiet weather expected through mid-week. It’ll be warm, with highs topping out in the low-to-mid-90s each afternoon after starting the day with temperatures in the low-to-mid-70s. Cloud cover will remain at a premium given northwest flow aloft and generally dry air. Heat indices will run generally in the mid-90s on Wednesday and Thursday thanks to the continued dry air. Humidity begins ticking up starting Friday, though, and that could yield heat indices near 100° in the afternoon with a better chance of a stray afternoon thunderstorm. Heat and humidity increases further as we get into the first weekend of July, and that could mean heat indices approaching 110° by Sunday.

Tropical update: Mostly quiet, but Cindy may try to regenerate

The tropics are, thankfully, mostly quiet. The only area of interest is between 60°-70°W later this week as there’s a slight chance that Cindy’s remnants could regenerate into a tropical cyclone as they move northward toward Nova Scotia. Otherwise, though, there are no concerns, and certainly nothing we are worried about here in the Lowcountry.
