Tuesday: Partly cloudy skies, isolated afternoon storms

/ July 24, 2023 at 6:15 PM

Tuesday’s forecast looks relatively benign across the area as partly cloudy skies dominate thanks to increasingly drier air aloft. We’ll start the day in the low 70s away from the coast before highs top out in the low-to-mid-90s in the afternoon. Heat indices should top out in the low 100s with low-70s dewpoints across the area. A shower or storm can’t be ruled out along the seabreeze, but most of us should get Tuesday in rain-free.

Rest of the work week: Staying warm and mostly quiet

Deep subtropical ridging at the surface and aloft will keep temperatures on the warm side and storms on the quiet side for the rest of the work week. Temperatures will generally run in the mid-90s on Wednesday and the low-to-mid-90s Thursday and Friday. There should be enough dry air to really preclude much of any storms on Wednesday before slight chances return to the forecast Thursday and Friday.

Tropics: A couple areas to watch, including one that may bring some rain this weekend

The Hurricane Center is watching two areas in the tropics for possible development. The first, a system west of the Lesser Antilles, has been steadily trending down in probability over the past few days, and is now looking less likely to become a tropical cyclone as it moves into increasingly hostile territory in the Caribbean.

The second area is a tiny trough south of Bermuda that will drift toward the Southeast coast as the week goes on. It has a small chance — about 20% — to organize into a tropical cyclone of some kind. Right now, the global models are pretty quiet with it, but we’ll keep an eye on it in case it tries to close off into a low. It may bring some moisture to the Southeast coast later this week into this weekend, but for now, it’s pretty tough to assess impacts — if any — on the Lowcountry.
