Thursday: One more reasonably warm day before possible record heat this weekend

/ June 24, 2026 at 5:51 PM

Another quiet day is on tap for Thursday with high pressure in control. Lows bottom out in the low 70s, warming to around 90° in the afternoon. Dry air (for this time of year, anyway) will hang on for one more day, though it will be a bit more humid than it was on Wednesday. High pressure and warm air aloft should keep a lid on thunderstorms for one more day as well.

Friday & the weekend: Another heat wave incoming, with triple digits possible

Thursday will feel almost wintry compared to what’s in store for Friday and the weekend. An intensifying ridge of high pressure over the Midwest will spread across the Southeast as well, helping to drive temperatures much warmer — perhaps toward records, especially on Sunday when temperatures could reach 100°.

Friday will start off in the mid-70s, but warm to the mid-90s in the afternoon with heat indices pushing the low 100s. A stray afternoon storm is possible, but for most of us, it’ll be a partly cloudy day. The ridge really begins to be felt on Saturday as we start in the upper 70s, warming to the upper 90s in the afternoon with nary a thunderstorm as the ridge suppresses development. By Sunday, we’re starting in the upper 70s and warming to near 100° in the afternoon thanks to a combination of the ridge and downslope flow around it; this downslope flow compresses and warms the air as it moves into SC off the Blue Ridge. The record high for June 28 is 99°, and the current forecast of 100° would break it. Heat advisories are certainly in the cards with dewpoints in the 70s. There is a small chance of a stray shower or storm Sunday evening, but we shouldn’t really count on that for any relief. Better rain chances start to kick in to start the new work week, though.
