Low pressure aloft will drift northward into our neck of the woods on Tuesday, which should help kick up a little more in the way of showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon and evening. It’ll be another warm and muggy start, with lows in the low to mid-70s across the area to start the day. Some guidance suggests storms appear possible near the coast to start the day, moving inland with time as the seabreeze pushes inland. The main concerns will be the potential for isolated flooding due to heavy rain from slow-moving storms and the risk for storms to produce strong wind gusts.

Rest of the work week: First legit front of the season cools things off

The autumnal equinox occurs Tuesday night around 8:05 PM, and a fairly well-timed cold front will dive through the area by Wednesday morning. The risk for some afternoon thunderstorms will persist, though, as the drier air will take some time to get here. Temperatures Wednesday bottom out around 70°, warming to the mid-80s in the afternoon.

We’ll really start to feel changes as that drier air punches in beginning Thursday. Lows bottom out in the mid-60s, but the ongoing push of cooler and drier air from the north should keep highs capped to around 80° in the afternoon. There will be some lingering moisture, mainly toward the coast, that could produce a stray shower or thunderstorm, but I suspect much of us get Thursday in rain-free. Friday gets off to an even cooler start, with lows in the low 60s warming to the upper 70s to near 80° in the afternoon under mostly sunny skies — truly a fantastic weather day the likes of which we haven’t seen since spring. We keep this vibe going into the weekend, too, with inland lows potentially scraping the upper 50s on Saturday.
